Using a scanner in the classroom.

One method of using a scanner in a classroom is to scan a student's work, such as a math problem worked out.  As more and more schools go to having devices in each student's hand math teachers struggle with how students can show their work.  Why not have students still show their work for the problems assigned and then they can scan their work and turn it in digitally.
Having students turn in work digitally allows for the teacher to grade more efficiently and quickly.  Using an LMS would allow the teacher to house the work and possibly in some LMS programs add notes and markups directly on the work.
With schools looking at different types of schedules such as a flexible schedule where students do not have so much seat time in a normal classroom.  Turning work in digitally allows for students to continue with their assignments without physically being in contact with their teacher.

  1. I like the idea of having students scan work to turn it in. I worked with elementary students this year to email work they did on iPads to their teachers, and the teachers found that they really liked being able to look at the work on their computer instead of handling loads of papers. I think scanning work and sending it is just another example of how technology can add convenience to the life of a teacher.

  2. One way on the iPad to turn in work would be to use google accounts and google drive app to turn documents into teacher through a shared folder. At Webb City we have teachers doing this all the way down to 3rd grade with the students turning everything in, with younger students you might have to do some of the work yourself.

  3. This would also be helpful for Parent/Teacher conferences. Having scanned work would make it easy to show parents what the students have done. Especially since you mentioned that completing things on devices you don't always have access to their thought processes.

  4. My son was using an app that allowed the students to record voice while showing their work. Very cool. Using a scanner in this way is another great idea. They could add too it with video, too.
